The Volcano - The Other Side of Nature: Part Two

Destructive Forces and Natural Disaster Enigma's

Volcanoes and Mankind Interactions

Truths and Encounters

The Famed Ring of Fire

A significant area of coastline encircling the Pacific Ocean, the Ring of Fire, is where frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur. Based on the edges of the world's main tectonic plates, the Ring of Fire is a horseshoe shape stretching 40,000km. With more than 1,500 active volcanoes on Earth, the ring is home to 452 volcanoes and 90% of the world's earthquakes. The 25 most massive eruptions on the planet have occurred at volcanoes in the Ring of Fire in the last 11,700 years.

Famous and Deadly Volcanoes

With 20 volcanic eruptions probably occurring as you read these words, many of these natural disasters have made history. Here are just three of the most well-known ones:

The Biggest Volcanic Devastation

There are thousands of volcanoes that have caused ruin and destruction to the planet. However, The most significant volcanic eruption recorded is Mount Tambora. Located in Indonesia, the Volcano erupted in 1815 and killed 10,000 people, almost the entire Tambora population. . The force of the eruption was so overbearing the Volcano blew itself apart. When its horrific volcanic flows reached the sea, the following tsunami's devastation killed even more people. Neighbouring areas also suffered severely. Falling ash encased the Earth with devastating effects, killing off large areas of vital vegetation, causing a further 80,000 human deaths due to starvation and disease. The total number of people killed due to the volcanic eruption on Mount Tambora exceeded 90,000.

Mount Vesuvius in Italy

Located in Italy's west coast, Mount Vesuvius has erupted more than 50 times and is one of the most dangerous on the planet. Its most famous eruption took place in 79 A.D, where it destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum from being buried under volcanic ash, mud, and rocks. Around 16,000 people died due to the eruption, and the cities were abandoned for centuries after. Its last eruption was in 1944, but experts believe that this unpredictable Volcano may cause another disastrous eruption sometime soon, which would be catastrophic as nearly 3 million people live within 30km of the Volcano's crater.

Krakatoa in Indonesia

Krakatoa is frequently erupting these days, but it is a lot milder and less of a threat than its most famous eruption in 1883. The explosions heard from as far as our homes here in Perth, and over 36,000 people died. The primary cause of death was the tsunami triggered by the eruptions, which reached over 40m. Destroying one hundred sixty-five coastal villages were. Plant and animal life didn't begin to re-establish for five years after the disaster. The climate was also affected by temperatures dropping all around the world.

Others on top of the list include:

Mount Peleé (Martinique: St. Pierre) is the biggest city on Martinique's Caribbean island. In 1902 Mount Peleé erupted, obliterating the entire city and all but 3 of the 30,000 residents instantly.
Mauna Loa in Hawaii: The largest Volcano on the planet, First erupting in 1843, it has since erupted another 33 times, making it one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Hence it is monitored 24 hours a day for any signs that it may erupt again.
Mount Pinatubo (Philippines): The second-largest eruption in the 20th century in 1991
Mount St Helens in the United States: Considered the most destructive eruption in U.S history, Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980

Home-land Australia

Australia is home to only two active volcanoes, one located on Heard and the other on McDonald Island (the southwest Indian Ocean, 4000km southwest of Perth and 1500km north of Antarctica) – both not of the mainland. Volcanic activity has occurred on Heard Island since the mid-1980s, with the sizeable active Volcano known as Big Ben is the most dominant of the island. Formed about 1 million years ago, Big Ben is covered with glaciers and has a plume of smoky ash billowing from the top and black lava flowing down the side. While Heard Island is larger, McDonald Island's volcanic action is much more violent (40km to the West of Heard). It broke its 75,000-year of silence with an eruption happening in 1992. In 1996-97, another massive eruption occurred, resulting in the island doubling in size to 2.4 square kilometres and increasing in elevation by about 100 meters. The volcanic activity resulted in the complete loss of vegetation on the island. There are currently no other active volcanoes in Australia. However, geological evidence shows that volcanoes in every state in Australia, including WA (19 small extinct volcanoes are in the Valley of Fitzroy River in the Kimberley region).

Volcanic eruptions are a reminder of the destructive power of nature and human vulnerability. Although we have learned a lot about these mountains over the millions of years, we still cannot prevent Nature form having her way (she is the boss). These magnificent yet deadly formations will continue to erupt, and it is difficult to predict precisely when they will blow up or how much devastation they will cause.

What can be said about Volcanoes is they are attractive and capable of creating a provocative conversation. There is no doubt volcanic eruptions are an unstoppable, destructive, violent force, unexpected natural disasters, and not to be reckoned with and never underestimated.

I don't know about you, but I found Volcano's a curious read worthy of investigation?

I look forward to us touching base again soon.

The Volcano - Part One

The other side of Nature – A Destructive Force

A Natural Disaster Enigma

I don't know about you, but Volcanoes intrigue me yet at the same time can send a shiver down my spine (the paradox of these beasts). You only have to hear the word Pompei to grasp the level of their power, the destruction of an entire city, and other horrifying stories.

We can't control them and we are at their mercy. But when they are quiet, we want to climb them, be thrilled by their bizarre striking features, and quench our desire to know more about them (ignoring the hidden, unpredictable danger they hold within).

For Millennia's they have played havoc with humanity. Causing hundreds of thousands of deaths, they have obliterated villages, dwellings, buildings, and other human-made establishments.

Yet many of us still go back for more, visiting them time and time again. We continue to restore or build new villages underneath these ominous mountains.

Volcanos taunt us as they can choose to sit dormant for thousands of years, and then without warning, they teach us a lesson about complacency; they suddenly erupt, as they shed havoc and destruction in their path. Almost as if they are laughing, they destroy entire forests and encourage other disasters to join them. Tsunamis, earthquakes, avalanches, and flash floods follow gladly in their footsteps. And if that's not enough, they often get the last laugh, add 'salt to the wound' ejecting suffocating ash sometimes thick enough to strangle plant life, animals, and humans – a terrible death.

So what is it that lures us to defy our sense of safety that is so important to us?

As is the case so often, my curiosity got the better of me. So I decided to explore Volcanoes' world (from a distance, of course) to understand a little more about these ominous hills of nature born from the depths of our planet.

Around 80% of the ocean remains unchartered - unmapped and unexplored.

Egypt has long been a popular subject that has captivated us for centuries

I never seem to tire of hearing about this land's past wealth and the achievements of its ancient civilization.

Continuing not to disappoint us, once again, Egypt holds her arms wide open to bear more.

Smithsonian magazine reports on the latest discovery, “On Saturday, October 3, archaeologists from Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities opened a sealed, roughly 2,600-year-old sarcophagus as a crowd of onlookers watched in anticipation. Lifting the lid, the researchers revealed a mummy wrapped in ornate burial linen; more than two millennia after the individual’s interment, the cloth’s inscriptions and colorful designs remained intact.”

Scheduled to open in Giza in 2021, the anticipated great Egyptian Museum will host the sarcophagi and many other splendid findings.

But a small part of the story of the Saqqara necropolis and its bounty.

“The Private Language of Venice”

                                                                                                                      Credit: Mint Images/Getty Images

Venice loved, adored, and a mirage of our fantasy and imagination

I don’t know about you, but when I think of Venice, it conjures up a myriad of thoughts and emotions. What comes to mind is romance, beauty, promiscuity, opulence, Venetian masks, lavish balls, gondola’s, guarded privacy (exclusivity), and mystery (including even a dark side, the perfect place to commit murder).

But there is so much more to beloved Venice.

BBC Travel reports, a beautiful story written by Robert Landon, removes much of the enigma attached to this small city surrounded by water.

‘A titbit to whet your appetite.’

“Although many travellers assume that the “authentic” Venice is long gone, the city still harbours the last remnants of a once-great civilisation, with its own language and customs.

Venetians have an uncanny ability to dodge, deflect, blend in, disappear in plain sight. Perhaps that's why so many travellers assume that “real” life in Venice was long ago trampled out of existence by hundreds of millions of tourist feet.

The truth is, the city still harbours an indigenous culture – the last remnant of a once-great civilisation, with its own language and customs. Yes, this way of life is endangered, but it is also very much alive. It’s just hard to detect with untrained eyes.”

The Animal Kingdom - The Wolf (Part 2)

Enemy-Friend, Loved Hated

Distinguished and Exceptional

Previously in Part One, we looked at the relationship between humans and Wolves – A Brief History (our turbulent love affair) and uncovered some interesting points. One example, the Wolf plays a critical role in maintaining our ecosystem and is an integral member of the earth's biological society.

Also, 'what came out of the wash' was for centuries the Wolf was branded a symbol of devastation, destruction, and death (particularly throughout Europe). The Wolf was dangerous, a nuisance, and therefore needed to be destroyed (predominately in the US). Further, the Wolf was depicted as evil and or as a ferocious creature of ill repute.

Perhaps this was because so little was known about them at the time alongside Mans need to dominate the land?

One of the most respected yet feared animals in all of the world, yet intriguing, unique, and fascinating animals

While we have made progress and look more favourably upon the Wolf, there is still much stigma surrounding them, their ways (habits, behaviours, and so forth).

Therefore, to conclude our story, let's remove a bit more of the Enigma and or misconceptions surrounding the Wolf by shedding light on some of their central features - Key physical characteristics (i.e., qualities, mannerisms, etc.).

The Heart of Tarot: Part Two

In the Language of Tarot – A book of Symbols

Further to my previous article, 'The Heart of Tarot, the Tarot is a book of Symbols founded upon Five Archetypal Worlds: The Animal, Human Creation, Garden, Landscape and Spiritual World. These Worlds, through their symbols, communicate, carry various messages.

For example, let's take the card 'The Emperor,' the Symbols found within, such as the Eagle (Animal World), Sword, Scepter and Crown (Human Creation World), signify - convey the meaning of Spiritual Evolution, Power, Authority, Discipline, Success, etc.

As discussed, Five Cohorts support The Archetypal worlds. Their primary role is to help make the symbols come to life. To (accentuate), embellish, describe, add, reinforce their meaning, and incite emotion. Their purpose is to create a more robust attachment in us towards the symbol's message whereby we marry our senses - link our subconscious with our conscious of igniting insight (significance - the relationship of the cards meaning in our life).

The Five Cohorts are Colour, Numbers, People (images), Words, and Signs
The role the Five Cohorts play will become more evident as we discuss them in-depth below:

Saving the Arctic

One way to combat climate change, a daring and bizarre proposal

Unconventional as it may sound, but then weirder things have worked, a new way to use Glass.
California-based non-profit Arctic Ice Project says scatter a thin layer of reflective glass powder over parts of the Arctic to protect it from the Sun's rays.

The approach is Safe and Effective

When placing glass powder, reflective material on top of young ice during the summer months, the ice is provided with extra protection, allowing it to rebuild. Why is Glass seen to spearhead the material of choice? The settled on silica – or silicon dioxide – occurs naturally in most sand and is often used to make Glass.

News to me, over the past decade, tests have been going on with encouraging results.

What I do know is, vanishing rapidly through rising temperatures, the melting of sea ice has an impact far beyond the arctic. Loss in the arctic affects the globe. There is an urgency, and we must do something.

In my opinion, fantastic! Anything that saves our environment sounds good to me. If it works, think of the massive benefits for our planet, human life, and inhabitants included. Sounds good to me.
